I. Roman Art and Architecture
A. Romans
1. adopted greek art
a. devoloped staues placed on public buildings and private
houses
b. produced sculpors
2. excelled in architecture ( highly practical art)
a. used colonades and rectaugular buildings
b. useed forms based on curved lines ( arch, vault, & dome)
3. first people to use concrete on a scale
4. used engineering to construct roads, bridges, and aqueducts
5. built a network of 50,000 miles of roads
II. Roman Literature
A. Augustan Age- the golden age of latin literature
B. poets of the Augustan Age
1. Virgil- wrote the Acheid
2. Horace- wrote the satiles
3. livy- wrote the history of rome
III. The Roman Family
A. Paterfamily- society headed by the male of the household
B. uppperclass children ( boys and girls)
1. expected to read and write
2. learn moral principals
3. learn family values
4. learn physical training to prepare to become a solider
C. Roman males believed weakness in females had to have male
guardians
D. when a roman father dies, the sin or nearest male relatives
assumed the role of the guardian
E. legal ages for men and women were to 12-14 yrs. of age
F. divorces were introduced in the 3rd century B.C.
G. changes in the 2nd century on families
1. paterfamilies no longer had absolute power over his children
a. could not sell his children into slavery or put them through death
2. no authority over the wife either
3. women were no longer required guardians
4. upper-class women had now freedom and independence
a. had the right to own, inherit, and sell property
5. Roman wifes were not segregated from males in the home
a. apprecigated companies were now under the center of household
social life

IV. slavery- comman thoughout the acient world
A. the use of slaves
1. many of them were foreign people who were captured in differnent
wars and brought back to Italy
a. used as household workers, such as cooks, values, waiters,
cleaners, and gardeners
2. built roads and public buildings, and formed large estates for the rich
3. 70,000 of them were led by their leader spartacus
a. defeated the roman aries before being killed in 71 B.C.
V. living conditions in Rome
A. Augustus organized a police force
B. insulae- roman apartments blocks constructed of concrete
C. high rents forced people to live in one room
D. Romans spent most of their time outdoors on the streets
E. serious problems in Rome
1. free grain and enterainment was provided to the poor on a grand
scale
2. public spectacles were provided by the emperors as part of great
religious festivals celebrated by the state providing 3 major types
of enteraiment including the gladiatoral shows
